The First Trimester Can Be a Whole Whirlwind

Between the morning sickness that shows up uninvited, fatigue that hits harder than a 3-hour Zoom meeting 😩, and emotional swings that belong a Netflix drama… you’re probably just trying to make it through the day.{1}

But plot twist, your skin’s also going through her own thing too. 😬 And while skincare might feel like the last thing on your to-do list, a few small, safe swaps now can set you up for a smooth, glowing ride ahead.

This isn’t about chasing perfection — It’s about being kind to your body and your baby 💕. You might not be able to control a majority of the changes you are experiencing, however, you can manage one. And what we want, that one thing that is in our power to do, we do.

Let’s dive in.

Your Body Is Officially Under Construction 🚧

24/7 energy is going into growing a whole human — and your skin’s just trying to keep up. Here’s what might pop up in the first 12 weeks:

💥 Breakout Booms {2}

Because hormonal surges (especially androgens) can lead to:

  • acne flare-ups
  • oilines or
  • that “why is my skin betraying me?” vibe.

All that is very normal.

😵‍💫 Sensitive AF

And the products you used to love suddenly feel like fire. Some even get Sahara-level dryness, others feel like their skin barrier packed its bags.

🔥 The Glow… or Not Yet

Everyone hypes the “pregnancy glow” ✨ — but early on, it’s often more “tired and queasy chic.” The real glow usually kicks in later, when blood volume rises.

Skincare During Pregnancy Is Safety First, Always 👶🏾🧴

Because what you put on your skin matters — some ingredients can seep into your bloodstream, and not all are baby-friendly.

🚫 So here are some Hard No’s (Say Bye Immediately):

  • Retinoids (Vitamin A crew):

Retinol, tretinoin (Retin-A), adapalene, tazarotene, retinyl palmitate — all off-limits. Oral versions are majorly harmful, and topical versions are risky too. Just skip.

  • Hydroquinone:

Used for skin lightening — but its high absorption rate makes it a no-go during pregnancy.

  • High-dose Salicylic Acid:

Tiny amounts in a wash-off cleanser < 5% is usually fine. But heavy peels, toners, or oral forms? Nah.

  • Chemical Sunscreens (esp. Oxybenzone):

Linked to hormone disruption. Go mineral, not chemical.

The Yes List, Safe, Soothing, Simple 💦:

  • Gentle Cleanser

Ditch harsh soaps. Go for a fragrance-free, non-stripping cleanser with a creamy or mild foaming base like CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser For Normal to Oily Skin  or Uncover Green Tea Revitalising Cleanser

  • Hydrating Moisturizer

Even oily skin needs hydration. Look for hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, or shea butter. No perfumes, no fluff — just goodness like Natural Mums Hydrating Moisturizer or Busu Naturals HYDRATE & REPAIR BODY LOTION

  • Mineral Sunscreen = MVP

Even if you’re couch-locked, protect your skin from melasma with SPF 30+ featuring zinc oxide or titanium dioxide like Sunkissed Sunscreen or Uncover Aloe Invisible Sunscreen

You Don’t Need a 10-Step Ritual

This isn’t K-drama skincare season. Keep it simple just cleanse ➜ moisturize ➜ protect. Your energy’s already doing divine work elsewhere.

Look — pregnancy is not one-size-fits-all. Some days you’ll feel radiant, other days like you’ve been hit by a hormonal bus. Either way, you’re doing something incredible.

Prioritize safety, simplicity, and kindness — to your skin, to your baby, and to yourself.

When in doubt? Ask your healthcare provider. Your peace of mind is part of the glow too.

In the next blog, we’re diving into second trimester — and how to ride that glow wave safely 💁🏾‍♀️✨ Till then, rest easy. You’re doing amazing, mama. You’re literally building a whole universe inside you 🌍💛
